High School Fellowship (Director’s Cut): Narrative Filmmaking

In these free, application-based programs, motivated students will collaborate with NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Imagine Entertainment, and peers to create a short film. Guided by NYU Adjunct Faculty Anthony Q. Artis and completing over 50 hours of college-level coursework, fellows will gain hands-on experience in filmmaking, and learn how to navigate and impact today’s visually driven culture. There is no cost to participate in these fellowships and fellows will be provided with a stipend.

PROGRAM DETAILS

Location: Jacob Burns Film Center Media Arts Lab

Program Dates: March 23–June 8, 2025 (8 Sundays) and Tuesday, June 10, 2025*
*Culminating screening, Q&A, and reception will take place on the evening of Tuesday, June 10, 2025

Grade Level: Students in grades 10 and 11

 

In collaboration with NYU Tisch School of the Arts, the Jacob Burns Film Center is pleased to offer an intensive filmmaking fellowship for 10th and 11th grade high school students in spring 2025. Led by NYU Tisch Adjunct Faculty Anthony Q. Artis, Director’s Cut: Narrative Filmmaking will be an eight-week course consisting of eight engaging sessions on the JBFC Campus.

In this pre-collegiate course, participants will take a deep dive into the craft of filmmaking through the creation of a short narrative film. Students will collaborate as part of a crew to master the essential skills of crafting a visual narrative. Tailored guidance will be provided, with sessions featuring live demonstrations, hands-on test shoots, and film screenings. At the end of the program, students will showcase their work for family and friends at the Jacob Burns Film Center’s Theater.

Working in small crews, students will:

  • Pitch and storyboard ideas
  • Learn core camera, lighting, and audio skills
  • Create a finished class film worthy of inclusion in any portfolio or application
  • Screen their final project at the Jacob Burns Film Center Theater

Soft Skills:

  • Collaborate as part of a film crew
  • Adapt to and implement peer and instructor feedback
  • Use critical thinking to solve dynamic on-set problems

Technical Skills:

  • Storyboarding and pre-production planning
  • Shot composition and cinematography
  • Perform and/or direct others on camera
  • 4-point lighting setups
  • Edit with Adobe Premiere Pro
  • On-location/live audio recording

Director’s Cut: Narrative Filmmaking includes several key features designed to nurture and support students’ growth:

  • $1000 stipend for transportation and potential lost wages
